On April 14, 1986, 28 KC – 10 and KC – 135 tankers of the European Tanker Task Force took off from their bases at RAF Mildenhall and RAF Fairford. Soon afterward, they were joined by 24 F – 111Fs from RAF Lakenheath and five RF – 111As from RAF Upper Heyford. After the initial refueling, six F – 111Fs and one RF – 111A returned to base, their mission as back – ups in case of tanking problems or other technical difficulties fulfilled.
