For me the province of poetry is a private ecstasy made public, and the social role of the poet is to display moments of shared universal epiphanies capable of healing our sense of mortal estrangement—from ourselves, from each other, from our source, from our destiny, from The Divine.

Di lahirkan pada tahun 1940 di Oakland, California. Buku pertama beliau merupakan himpunan sajak - sajak bertajuk Dawn Visions yang diterbitkan oleh Lawrence Ferlinghetti di City Lights Books, San Francisco pada tahun 1964. Buku kedua beliau bertajuk Burnt Heart, Ode to the War Dead juga diterbitkan oleh City Lights. Beliau adalah pemenang anugerah Ina Coolbrith untuk Sajak dan James D. Phelan Award untuk manuskrip sajak. Beliau memeluk Islam pada tahun 1970 dan menggunakan nama Abd al - Hayy.
